Dear Diary #1: The end and the beginning

Moving-to-Vancouver-Diary-Entry

Next month marks one year since I made the move to Vancouver so I think now is the perfect time to share some of my thoughts throughout the transition. Dear Diary is a collection of snippets from my journey – the things I did, the feelings I had. Follow me as I share bits and pieces of how this year unfolded. These are the first entries: the end and the beginning.

T-2 Days | October 16

In ten minutes, I submitted my resignation.

In one day, I signed my actual contract.

In one week, I decided where I would live for an indefinite amount of time.

In one month, I am going to leave for the other side of the country.

In two days, I am getting on a plane and leaving the city I have grown to know and love.

Today is the last time I will have lunch with one of my favourite people. Tomorrow will be the last day I train with my good friend of 20 years, the person I can always count on to be ruthless because he can be. Tomorrow will also be the last time I have dinner with the people I call family.

I have packed my life into 8 boxes and 4 suitcases (I know, I’ve got a lot of baggage) and they’re already on their way across the country. It’s crazy how fast all of this happened.

Never did I imagine that I would be moving all the way across the country for work. I keep telling myself it’ll be a good learning opportunity for my career; it’ll be a chance for me to grow up; I’ll escape from all the things I don’t like.

Vancouver

D-Day | October 18

As I write this, I’m not far from Vancouver. For the first time, my eyes didn’t begin to droop the moment I got on the plane. I don’t have the upset stomach feeling I get every time I try and stay awake on a flight. From the lakes of Ontario to the Great Plains, and now passing through the mountains – it’s my first time seeing it all. Subconsciously I might just be too nervous to feel anything else.

Consciously, I feel really calm. It is still surreal that I will be living in a different city. With such little luggage on me, it just feels like I’m going on a short trip. A trip with no return ticket.
