Dear Diary #3: One month after my Vancouver move

1 Month | November 18

It’s been exactly one month since I made the move to Vancouver. I know it is going to take some time to settle into living in a new city so I’m taking things slow. The first thing I’ve been tackling is furnishing my home and making it truly mine. In the past couple of weeks, I’ve purchased and built a lot of the furniture. I’ve also unpacked and found a home for everything that was sitting in the boxes. To be honest, I’ve been super picky about what I want, right down to the plates. I know it’s a little excessive, but I want to make sure I love every part of my new home. My goal is to ensure that I have a home I enjoy going back to, especially since I’m in a new city alone. Even the smallest details can make the biggest difference to me.

In the last month, I’ve been forcing myself to do a lot of things on my own. I want to be comfortable being on my own. I’ve got eating on my own down pat, but now it’s all the other things. I went to a food festival for the first time on my own, and it felt odd. I was very self-conscious throughout the night. Although I was surrounded by people, I didn’t feel comfortable starting conversations, especially since seemed like everyone else was already immersed in conversation with the people they came with. I tried to scout out other people who were there alone, but it didn’t seem like there were any. By the end of the night, I switched focuses to simply trying all the booths I was most interested in.

I’ve also attempted to go to gym classes regularly, hoping I’d make friends, but that didn’t go as planned either. I forced myself try all these new classes (thank you class pass), but I eventually got tired of looking for more. So now I just go to classes I want to and I’m enjoying them a lot more than before.

Another thing I’ve done is make plans to see people that live in Vancouver that I haven’t talked to in a long time. Reconnecting with old friends made me realize how easy it can be. Unless you hated each other before, making “new” old friends is a great way to get comfortable in a new city. Through them, I have also made new friends and started to spend more time with them.

I guess Vancouver is not as bad as I thought it would be.
